Here and now…

Our eldest (Tyler) earned his PhD this summer and moved home while applying for jobs. To celebrate this momentous occasion, we invited his college friends from JBU (his undergrad) to stay for a long weekend.

We’ve known Tyler’s friends for years and have enjoyed hosting them whenever they were available to visit. This was going to be the first time to host them for several days in the new house.

With only two showers in the house, we knew we needed to do something to make their stay more comfortable. After discussing our options of where to add a shower, we settled on adding it to the half bath in the basement. This would allow any guests easy access to a shower and give Tyler his own spot while staying here until it’s time for his next adventure.

The process of adding a shower was easier than you would expect. The back wall of that room had dead space which just happened to be located in the mechanical room where all of the plumbing was located. This made the plumbing process much easier.

We contacted our contractor, Richard, to see if he could squeeze our project in and thankfully, he could. He suggested using Onyx for the walls and brought samples over for me to look at. I chose a grey color that matched the sink.

While waiting for the Onxy to arrive, Richard started working on the walls. Since he has a full-time job elsewhere, he fit us in during his limited free time. That man is a working machine! Over a few weekends, he managed to get the hole cut, the platform made, and the walls up. The shower is in the basement, so a platform had to be installed for the plumbing to go under.

I chose matte black finishes for the fixtures to match the rest of the bathroom. We also ordered a glass door with matte black hardware to match.

Since this was going to be Tyler’s primary bathroom, I added some photos that I knew he would appreciate and tweaked the décor to his preferences. It was already a manly bathroom, so this wasn’t too difficult.

All of the men in the household are thankful for the addition. The boys don’t have to compete for the shower when getting around in the morning and Jeff doesn’t have to share his shower with anyone (except me). (OK- that sounds worse than I intended but you know what I mean….)

I know in the future we will be grateful for the shower addition when the kids are bringing their spouses and children to visit, but in the here and now, I’m grateful I no longer have a spouse who is irritated that he has to share his shower.
