Sweet Dreams are made of this….
Our current home has 3 bedrooms, which, for parents of adult children, works great for us. The main bedroom is on the top floor and the other 2 bedrooms are in the basement, so we all have our privacy….
The boys’ bedrooms were the first usable rooms in the house. Jeff and I lived in them for several months until our bedroom and at least one functioning toilet were available upstairs.
This means that while I was broken and couldn’t use the stairs, I was basically stuck in those two basement rooms unless I crutched around the outside of the house up the hill, while dodging mole holes.
It wasn’t a very fun time for me.
We used one bedroom to sleep in and the other as our “living room,” and I use the word “living” loosely. We had two chairs, a card table with a tv on it, and a small side table on wheels to hold drinks and supplies.
While stuck in these rooms, the house was in full construction mode. I heard all of the sawing, roofing, tiling, and nail pounding that you would expect on a major construction project. Let’s just say, it was a rough couple of months down there. My ears are still ringing….
Eventually the rest of the basement was mostly finished (we still need to paint the windows and finish trimming the doors), so I had a bit more space to roam on my crutches. Once we started getting furniture containers delivered to our driveway, we were able to furnish the boys’ rooms and the rest of the basement.
The boys’ bedrooms share a shower/commode room but they each have their own vanity space. There is also another ½ bath in the basement for *cough* emergencies….
One of our favorite hotels in Indianapolis has a very unique industrial style that the boys like, so I used it for my design inspiration. I sent Ty and Zach photos of vanities that would work in that style and when they agreed on one that they both liked, I ordered them.
Part of the adventure of this remodel has been finding supplies. After several weeks waiting for the vanities, I received an E-mail from Home Depot saying that they were no longer available. I had to scour the internet for similar replacements that were in stock. Not an easy task. Thankfully, I found what we needed, or I would have had to start the arduous process of getting my kids to agree on a different vanity all over again.
I went with matte black for all of the finishes in the bathroom which adds to the industrial vibe. I also chose a shower surround that mimics subway tile, which is classic industrial without the cost and maintenance of real subway tile. I chose a shower surround instead of a tub surround as it is taller which provides greater wall coverage to prevent water damage. The basement has tall ceilings so fitting a tall surround wasn’t an issue.
Although they had their own rooms, they weren’t really finished until recently. There was trimming and some painting that needed doing. We also needed to hang photos and other décor on the walls. We finally have all of that done, and I think their rooms look great. They seem to enjoy their own space. They even have a back staircase right off the garage door so they can come and go as they please.
You can’t ask for more… space to yourself where you can get some peace and quiet. And now that Zach has room darkening shades so that when the local wildlife sets off the outside security light in the middle of the night, he can sleep through it.
So, I guess sweet dreams really are made of this….
