Jeff has his dream closet too….
Lest anyone feel sorry for Jeff, he has his dream closet too.
I should probably give some backstory on this one….
At our former home, our laundry room was on the main floor close to the kitchen and garage. This was very convenient for doing laundry but wasn’t convenient for putting said laundry away. We had a chute to take the dirties down, but we all had to haul our own clean laundry back upstairs to put away. This seemed to be a problem for Jeff, as he never wanted to take the time and/or energy to put his laundry away. (And no…I wasn’t going to do that for him. I washed the clothes, everyone had to put their own away).
There his laundry would stay folded (somewhat) and stacked higher and higher as the days, weeks, months rolled by until I couldn’t take it anymore and would say something like “For the love of all things Holy, would you put your freaking laundry away”. This one sided “conversation” would usually happen when his pile of clothes started to topple off of the cabinet and onto the floor. He would then relent and haul his clothes upstairs with exasperated sighs and put them away whilst grumbling at me. That was our cycle for 15 years. A cycle that would probably break other wives, but I’m made of sterner stuff.
When we purchased our fixer home, I had the golden opportunity to design our bathroom(s) and closets to fit our current needs. This meant that I could realize a dream and get the laundry facilities moved closer to where the clothes actually go. (The older we get, the more we will appreciate this feature).
I decided to use the closet adjacent to Jeff’s side of the master bath as the plumbing wouldn’t have to be moved very far and the same tile could be installed when we did the bathrooms. At this point, I believed that Jeff and I would be sharing a closet, and that would be the laundry room only. That’s when Jeff had a brainchild: why not make the new laundry room into his closet too? That way he would never have to put his clothes away again.
I can’t express enough how giddy with excitement this made him. I truly believe he has been more excited about the prospect of his closet being the joint laundry room than he has been about the completion of any other room in the house. This brilliant idea may have saved our marriage.
Who knows?
But one thing I DO know is that Jeff is happy and that makes me happy too….
