The First Finished Room…

You would think with all of the work that has been going on for months that the first completely finished room would be something impressive, like a bathroom or kitchen. In that, you would be wrong. Unfortunately, those rooms take a lot more work.

This means that our first completely finished room is my closet.

Now this is no ordinary closet. This is a gloriously spacious closet that I don’t have to share with my beloved, but messy, husband. I am absolutely thrilled! According to my son, who just graduated from college in May, my closet is approximately the size of his dorm room. In fairness he had, what I have been told is “the smallest two-person dorm room on campus.” I’m not sure if I should feel happy about the size of my closet or upset about the amount we paid per square foot for him to live during college….

Probably best not to think about that….

Most of the bones of the closet were already there when we purchased the house. All we needed to replace was one shelf and the hanger bars. I had the entire thing painted the same white used throughout the house before the carpet was installed. I also had the lighting replaced. Out with the track lighting and fluorescent box, in with the smaller lights and a cool chandelier I found at Lowes.

I purchased a blue poof from Wayfair for the center of the room under the chandelier. I use it for getting shoes on and for sitting and gaming on my phone when I want to hide out from the rest of the world. I also purchased matching hangers from the Container Store because I had a gift certificate and I love things to match. (Jeff gets my old hangers.) Over the next few days, I spent my time moving items from the cedar closet we have been using and searching through boxes for other items like shoes and winter clothes. In the last days of moving, things became a jumbled mess. Hopefully I still have some shoes in storage somewhere or I may need to shop for dress shoes as I have exactly one pair of navy dress shoes at my disposal this red-hot moment. Good thing I rarely dress up….

One of the really cool features of my closet is that it is hidden behind mirror doors. (Usable mirrors, not those nightmarish ones from the stairway.) I love this feature, not for the mirrors as I hate looking at myself in the mirror, but because I love the secret hideaway feel of the closet. As a kid I wanted one of those secret rooms behind a bookcase. For now, I will settle for my somewhat hidden closet room behind unfortunately accurate mirrors. All in all, it’s a pretty good deal and hey….one room down… many, MANY to go….
